Teresa Cote is a graduate of Immaculata University receiving a Master’s degree in Psychology & Counseling. She is a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) and a nationally certified counselor (NCC). Moreover, she is a Licensed Clinical Addictions Counselor (LCAC) and a DOT Certified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)
Teresa has more than 15 years experience working with individuals, families, and couples in many clinical inpatient and outpatient settings. She specializes in many areas of expertise ranging from severe mental health disorders such as: schizoaffective, bipolar, personality disorders depression, anxiety, trauma and abuse (PTSD), grief & loss, adjustment issues, anger management/domestic violence, couples and family conflict resolution as well as with substance abuse disorders.
Teresa’s main therapeutic approach is cognitive behavioral (CBT) working within a values system framework, in addition to this, she defines herself as eclectic and holistic and uses other methods as needed. She believes this is crucial to the therapy process in order to create a therapeutic dynamic that is unique to each person who enters into treatment.
One of her specialties is in the work of inner healing. This therapeutic approach reaches into the root core issues that stem from the emotions of the heart and address specific negative patterns that can cycle into a self -defeating process.
Although one of Teresa’s specialties is Christian Counseling, she strives to be sensitive towards those with other belief systems. She has a desire to see lasting hope, freedom and restoration in the lives of every individual who enters her office.
Another therapeutic specialty is as an addiction specialist. She therapeutically addresses patterns, triggers and honestly looks at the whole picture and origin of the addictive behaviors in a non-judgmental and honest safe place. Teresa’s work uniquely offers combined expertise that have been gleaned over the years of working in various inpatient and outpatient clinical settings with individuals with addiction concerns and mental health disorders (dual diagnosis). She also believes that it is important for the whole family system to be involved in an individual’s recovery process.
One of Teresa’s newest modality is a form of biofeedback. This treatment stems from her work with individuals that struggle with anxiety, stress, and panic disorders.
In her training, she has learned that all forms of stress stimulate your sympathetic nervous system and cause sympathetic and parasympathetic imbalance. When stress is going on, it creates a neurological cascade of events that leads to what science now calls Sympathetic Survival Syndrome. When people get stuck in this survival mode, the ability to heal, grow, love, and flourish is greatly diminished. The brain and the nervous system are both compromised. Brain Based Wellness/Brain Tap is an advanced technology that can dramatically balance and enhance brain function.
It is one of the most powerful and effective antidotes to stress and it can create balance, symmetry, harmony, and health in the body. By using light, sound and visualizations, it has the ability to allow you to overcome obstacles and decrease negative symptoms significantly.
Teresa is an overcomer and worked through a long and tough journey within her life. She overcame a life of abuse and trauma early on after becoming a married teenage mother. She experienced divorce and was single mom of three for several years before she remarried.
Through Teresa’s personal journey of healing she had a passion to touch the lives of others and make a difference. She went back to school and obtained her dream of becoming a counselor with a desire to help others to overcome seemingly impossible situations and a belief that they can receive lifelong healing within their lives.
When Teresa is not working she loves spending time with family, the outdoors, gardening, reading and music. She and her husband of 31 years have a blended family of four children and nine grandchildren.
